AP INDY -
ESTABLISHING A SERIOUS SIRE DYNASTY
AP INDY (1989) was a multiple G1 winner and was Horse-of-the-Year and Champion 3-y-o Colt USA. He is the sire of 13 crops, 919 foals, 693 runners, 485 (70% to runners) winners, 114 (16.5% to runners) black type winners including Bernardini (Champion 3-y-o Colt, $3,060,480), Mineshaft (Horse-of-the-Year twice, Champion Older Male, $2,283,395), Tempera (Champion 2-y-o Filly, $670,240), Catch The Thrill (Champion 2-y-o Filly, $223,011), Festival Of Light (Horse-of-the-Year twice), Golden Missile ($2,194,510, Pimlico Special Handicap -G1), etc.
AP INDY has TWICE been Champion Sire of North America (2003 & 2006) and was 2nd in 2007. AP INDY was 2007 Leading Sire by Stakes Winners & Graded Stakes Winners: 18 Stakes Winners including Classic Winners BERNARDINI and RAGS TO RICHES. AP INDY was also 2007 Leading Sire by Yearling Sales Average & Median: Yearling Average is US$825,000 and Median is US$675,000. AP INDY’s current AEI is 3.73.

BILL OPPENHEIM writes: “At the end of 1998, the year his first 4-y-o’s raced, AP INDY topped the list of Leading Sires by ‘A Runner Index’ for the first time. He’s never been out of the top 3 since (Storm Cat topped the list 3 times, Danzig twice), and the end-of-year 2007 figures put him back on top for the 5th time, with an index of 5.08”.
The only non-Northern Dancer horse among the top 5 world stallions is AP INDY. None of those 5 great Northern Dancer sons or grandsons is still active: Danzig, Nureyev, and Danehill have died; Sadler’s Wells and Storm Cat are now retired.
Many of AP INDY’s sons are now retired to stud and proving to be top sires in their own right. Lane’s End’s STEPHEN GOT EVEN was responsible for the 2005 G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and 2-y-o Champion Stevie Wonderboy, a year after Declan’s Moon, by another son of AP INDY in MALIBU MOON, also earned top juvenile honors from Eclipse voters. PULPIT (9th leading sire 2007 and already the sire of successful sires Sky Mesa, Tapit, Stroll, Essence of Dubai, etc), GOLDEN MISSILE, and OLD TRIESTE are others that have themselves sired G1 winners. PULPIT’S son TAPIT was Leading Freshman and Juvenile Sire in 2008 and has sired 2 G1 winners in his first crop including Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies G1 winner, STARDOM BOUND.
AP INDY is represented by a number of promising young sons, including Champion BERNARDINI, who stood his first year for a fee of $100,000, as well as AP WARRIOR, SUAVE and Coolmore’s latest addition, MAJESTIC WARRIOR. Throughout South America, AP INDY stallions are starting to make waves, led by the phenomenally successful INDYGO SHINER in Argentina, who so far has 10 stakes winners from his first crop including the winners of 3 of Argentina’s classic races in 2008, the Guineas, Derby and Oaks equivalents.
AP INDY is the Top Sire of his generation - and has singlehandedly revived the entire Bold Ruler sire line. |
